Our Mission

The mission of UT Dallas is to provide the State of Texas and the nation with excellent and innovative education and research. A major part of delivering that mission includes advancing research, which is a complex endeavor taking place in a very competitive environment. The Office of Information Technology Cyber Infrastructure and Research in collaboration with the UTD Office of Research is here to help you succeed. Together, we will work with our customers in procuring and enabling HPC capabilities for UTD.

High Performance Computing for Research and Education

The High Performance Computing for Research and Education (HPCRE) department is jointly established in 2024 by the Office of Research and Innovation and Office of Information Technology. Informally known as HPC@UTD, we offer the systems and resources along with facilitation services to give our faculty, students, and the research community everything they need for their high performance computing needs.

Our mission: Provide The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) research community with cutting-edge high-performance computing services that promote and advance the research and education mission of the University.

History

We established this team in 2015 to offer centralized HPC systems and services to support research and teaching on campus as well as at our partner research institutions. We operate 4 primary HPC clusters that are available for our campus researchers. We offer end to end lifecycle support and consulting for installation of new assets for HPC and guidance on optimal usage of compute resources. We currently serve over 700 users with our two primary HPC clusters. Some of our customers include faculty and students from departments like Physics, Mathematical Sciences, Material Sciences and Engineering, GeoSciences, Genomics, Center for Longevity, and many more.

Ganymede consisted of nodes retired from the Stampede 1 system from the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC).

Our second cluster, Ganymede 2, offers faculty a condo model to integrate their compute resources as nodes in the cluster.

In addition to the campus clusters, we have partnered with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas to set up, operate, and manage their BigTex cluster used for economic research. We manage and support Cortex, another HPC system for the Center for Vital Longevity, which is a part of UTD.

In 2024, we reinforced our HPC commitment to our campus and we are looking forward to our new system coming live in early 2025, as we continue to strengthen our engagement with the research community.
